Have you been to the Farmers’ Market at Brownwood Paddock Square? It’s one of my favorite things to do on Saturday mornings. I love seeing the local vendors with their fresh produce, breads, pastries, cheese, plants, and so much more. One of my favorites is the Mexican stand for their homemade goodies (you have to try their Chicarrones!) And now that we are well into October, there are plenty of vendors lining the square.
If you’re there early this morning (10/23/21) you will also see the Running of the Squares 5k – Brownwood.
Send me a comment and tell me what your favorite part of the Farmers’ Market is!
Heading into the weekend I wanted to touch on something that seems to be the elephant in the room lately. Shortages in the food service industry. There is so much to write about here, but my intention is to just briefly discuss it and serve as a reminder to treat others with respect, kindness, and patience. And then let’s get on with enjoying the weekend!!
Restaurants all over the country are experiencing shortages in many ways – and the excellent establishments we have here in The Villages® are no exception. Some may be experiencing shortages from distributors on random products due to the supply chain disruption that the restaurant industry is currently facing nationwide. Please note when looking for your favorite dishes that some menu items may not be currently available – this can change daily. This is no fault of your server, or the manager.
We have also been hearing a LOT that so many places are “short-staffed”. This struggle is real. Our servers, hosts/hostesses, kitchen staff, and bartenders are working hard to provide us with top-notch service. However, with this shortage, they are experiencing delays at times. If you see empty tables and the hostess tells you it’s a 20-minute wait, PLEASE be understanding that there is a reason and show some compassion, patience, and grace. It might be that the kitchen is backed up, or not enough servers are on-shift to cover every table, or it could be a computer outage. Trust me when I say that the restaurant managers, owners, staff…all want to serve you to the best of their ability and sometimes that means leaving tables vacant so you can enjoy your meal in a timely manner.
There are several reasons for the service industry getting hit so hard with today’s shortages, many that are beneath the surface of what you might expect. It’s not all about people being lazy and not wanting to go back to work and that’s a subject for another day. We are here to support our restaurants and service staff, not to judge what we may not know. So again, please make sure to treat the staff that does show up who are working hard to serve you, with respect and compassion. We have many fantastic restaurants here in our community and they all deserve our understanding during these crazy times.
Now…let the weekend begin and ENJOY! CHEERS!!
Hi Village Diners!
TGIF!! It’s a perfect time to celebrate our heritage with the Heritage Festival at Lake Sumter Landing tonight from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. (Friday, October 8th). Last week we had a chance to visit and celebrate at Spanish Springs, and hopefully the weather holds out so we can celebrate some more at Lake Sumter. The square is certainly festive with the décor representing countries from around the world and vendors are lining the square, along with food trucks and the Passport Challenge. Make sure you travel around to the vendors with the special festival logo and receive a stamp in your “passport” so you can get a commemorative Heritage Festival pin. And don’t forget to check out today’s Dining & Happy Hour Specials over on Friday’s tab here on the website…SO many delicious options!
As I was walking around the square this afternoon, it made me think of my own personal heritage. Our family has direct descendants that arrived on the Mayflower! How cool is that? Between both of my parents’ families, we are the perfect blend of a huge melting pot with a little German, English, Irish, Bohemian, Czechoslovakian and a dash of Native American royalty. And speaking of my parents…can I just tell you how much fun it’s been living the Village life here with them?! …but we’ll save that for another post.
Did I mention there will be plenty of entertainment tonight also? The Wonder World Band with Clark Barrios will be center stage to keep us moving to the beat. If you know me, you know I love to dance after dinner and I will be there! If you are out and about during the festival tonight, make sure you say Hola! …Bonjour…Ciao…Hallo…or Aloha! I would love to meet you and hear about YOUR heritage too!
Hi Village Diners!
You may recall earlier this summer, Mary had posted she was looking to partner with someone to help keep the Villager Eats site up and running. Well…so I did a thing!! I have officially acquired the website VillagerEats.com and am SO excited I can’t wait to share more as the journey continues.
My name is Debi Stovicek and I’m a fairly new transplant here, but definitely no stranger to the area. My parents and extended family have been here for 18+ years and I’m amazed at the growth in the community, especially the food scene. I love all things food! Dining out, happy hour, restaurants, dessert…and of course, taking photos of delicious meals and beverages. Now I get to share that with all of you friendly folks! I cannot wait to meet y’all!!
If you are in or near The Villages, or heading here for a visit and not sure where to go, you will want to check out the site for daily dining and happy hour specials!! Stay tuned for new and updated features and events too.
Thank you Mary for all that you’ve done with this site and entrusting it to me! I promise to continue serving our diners with the best experience possible.
So come dine with me and enjoy the culinary journey along the way!! …now what’s for dinner?! 🙂
